Ornamental Reductions

The process of reducing the overall canopy of a tree.

Basson's Arboriculture specialise in reshaping of trees, shrubs and hedges. Our pictures speak for themselves! In most cases Basson's Arboriculture recommends a maximum crown reduction of 20%. Larger reductions can lead to heavy regrowth, which will block out light and can damage the health of a tree.

Every tree that we work on is cut to a strong growing junction or back to a collar. This promotes healthy, strong growth that is more natural looking and better for the tree. Heavy reductions, or cuts that are in the wrong place, will 'fool' the tree into thinking that it has had storm damage. The tree's dormant buds will then produce fast growing, weak wood (epicormic growth) that is a defence mechanism designed to produce large quantities of leaf bud that looks unsightly and unnatural.

Hedging

We specialise in hedging, a straight hedge can make a real difference to your garden!

Note: conifers do not readily generate foliage beyond their green outer edges. It is possible to reduce the height of a conifer tree/hedge considerably and still preserve it's life, but removing too much of the sides will result in either death or large dead patches. In most cases, we recommend trimming no more than 1.5ft (45cm) from the sides of an evergreen conifer, but on occasions, this can be considerably more.

Crown Thinning

Trees often need thinning when they have been cut incorrectly or have had heavy reductions.

Removing diseased, dead and epicormic regrowth can in most cases, not only improve the aesthetics of the tree, but can also improve the health of the tree (especially with fruit trees). Note: if the canopy is thinned too much, it will encourage regrowth, so we recommend a crown thin of 20% or less.

Fruit Tree Pruning

Fruit trees need special care if they are to bear large healthy fruit. Pruning is done in the dormant months from around leaf drop to the end of February. ALL cuts must be back to a large 'fruiting bud', this encourages the fruit to form in the summer. Fruit trees often benefit from crown thinning, this does remove some fruiting buds, but quite often, this is beneficial because it allows light to the fruit which helps it to ripen.NOTE: If fruit trees are cut incorrectly, it may take many years for the tree to recover, and as always Basson's Arboriculture strongly believes on 'slight reductions' to minimise re-growth.

Crown Raising

The process of removing the lower limbs of the tree.

This is often the quickest, easiest and indeed the cheapest way to allow light through the canopy, while minimising dense regrowth. Quite often, if a tree is not out of shape but is blocking light, we would recommend this rather than a canopy reduction as the tree will stay looking natural, and reduces the chance of the tree's growth accelerating.
